Try something a little different for Mother’s Day this year, instead of flowers, chocolates or prosecco (although these are all winning ideas in our eyes), why not go down the sentimental route and give her something personal that you’ve made yourself. Most Mothers or Mother figures treasure these gifts more than shop bought ones. A little effort goes a long way and a handmade Mother’s Day gift is something she’ll keep forever.

Baby’s footprint decoration

A decorative sentimental homemade present ideal for new Mum’s (and Grandmother’s too), is a footprint hanging ornament or decoration. You can buy air-dry craft clay from Hobbycraft for under £5, simply roll out the clay and cut to your desired shape and size. We’ve chosen to capture the tiny footprint of team member Ali’s newborn baby. Once you’ve made your baby’s hand or footprint, make a small hole in the corner for threading some ribbon or cord and allow it to dry for 24 hours until solid. We’ve threaded some Preciosa bicone beads through with leather cord to give a bit of extra sparkle! This is a fun craft project to do with children of any age and makes a thoughtful gift.Simple designs with rhinestones

This year we’ve tried to come up with a slightly different take on a homemeade Mother’s Day card using craft rhinestones. Instead of buying a pre-made card with the usual flowers and heart patterns on and then gluing on crystals, we wanted to create a simple but creative and abstract design to bling with clear rhinestones. I found a simple silhouette image of a mother and baby online, lightly copied a section of it onto a blank card in pencil, then applied Zodiac non hotfix clear rhinestones in different sizes. Using a variety of sizes is helpful for creating a neater finish on the curved sections. I used a mixed pack for this.Doggy Paw Print

A fun and playful idea from team member Zoe - capture a pet paw print using a ‘Clean-touch ink pad’ for a gift from their beloved pet! Zoe managed to get a clear print from her dog, while keeping both hands and paws ink-free, and will use the imprint to create a Mother’s Day card. Zoe opted for black but you could try other colours and make an Andy Warhol style piece of art – and why not bling it up to with some low costing rhinestones for craft from Zodiac.Children’s handprint art

For a sentimental gift, why not get your children involved to create a handmade piece of art. Get messy and have fun making handprints, then when dry, glue on some flatback craft rhinestones to add a bit of sparkly detail. It’s a gift any Mum or Grandma will treasure. Alison had a fun morning getting creative with 2 year old Lily and her messy painted hands, then glued on some Aqua Bohemica and Jonquil non hotfix rhinestones with Gem Tac glue. Once dry, it looked fab in a picture frame, with the crystals twinkling as the light hits them – a pretty piece of sentimental art for Lily’s Grandma.Crystallized flowers in box frame

Using a cricut machine to cut out shapes, patterns and wording is the latest trend in DIY and craft. Gill used her cricut to create these intricate, pretty flowers and the vinyl ‘Love you Mum’ heart. Once the flowers were assembled, Gill glued on some Zodiac Clear diamantes to give that extra touch of sparkle. She bought a simple box frame from Ikea which is perfect for 3D cricut designs. It’s so different to anything else you would see and has that added personal touch too. You could easily add some pink rhinestones to the flowers to give even more bling.
