What is the Crystal Katana used for?

It is a rhinestone pick up tool, sometimes called a rhinestone picker or a crystal setter, for hand setting flatback crystals. The wax end lifts each stone off your tray and the metal end places and presses it into the glue. It replaces tweezers, wax pens and the blu tack on a cocktail stick method that most people try first, and it is used for nail art, dance and theatre costume, bridal work, cake artistry and jewellery making.

Is the Crystal Katana worth the money?

If you set rhinestones occasionally, a wax pen will get you by. If you set them in any real quantity, the Katana pays for itself in saved time and dropped stones. The tip holds its shape rather than denting, it does not need sharpening, and when it eventually wears you replace the tip for a fraction of the price of a new tool rather than starting again. It is also a tool you can hand a client across a nail desk without apologising for it. For professionals doing this daily, it is one of the easier buys to justify.

Does the Crystal Katana leave residue on crystals?

Far less than the alternatives. The tip is a firm jewellers wax rather than the soft beeswax used in cheaper positioners, so it grips on contact and releases cleanly instead of smearing. You may still see a trace on the surface of a stone occasionally, which is normal for any wax pick up tool. A wipe with an acetone based nail polish remover once your glue is dry clears both wax and glue residue and brings the sparkle straight back.
